Activism. It’s good to stand for something, but more effective to do something. Activism’s activists do just that: something, and on a regular basis, too.
Hollywood often paints activists as cliches – Uber-Activists. The ones with the paste colored Ford Pinto that is being held together with myriad bumper stickers on touchy topics, old 60’s clichés and sun-peeled smiley faces. The cheery people with diffuse attention and lots of cats.
Those characters are fun and all, and they definitely exist – I know a few of them myself, and love them for the silly, caring souls that they are. But that ain’t the way people most people who make a habit of following thoughts with actions actually are.
Activism is the act of consistently championing and working to further a consistent cause, and it is to be celebrated, in my opinion. Activism founded the United States of America. Activism liberated slaves, brought equality to the work place, helped to make our air and water cleaner, and continues to do many of these types of important works.
When I am at my best, Activism is pushing me forward, urging me to stand up for and act on my beliefs and values.
